What Movers Can’t Move
What Professional Movers Are Unable to Transport
Potentially Hazardous Items
It is illegal for professional movers to transport flammable, corrosive, explosive, or otherwise hazardous materials. This might include, but is not limited to:
- Acid
- Ammunition
- Batteries
- Bleach
- Charcoal
- Fireworks
- Gasoline
- Kerosene
- Loaded weapons
- Paint cans
- Pesticide
- Poisons
- Propane
If the pros won’t move it, you’d be wise to do the same. Don’t forget to drain fluid and remove batteries from everything you’re bringing. Also consider leaving paint and oils for your home’s next residents. Finally, check with the EPA to determine how to properly dispose of other chemicals.
Food and Perishables
- Animals
- Frozen or refrigerated food
- Open containers
- Plants
- Produce
Valuables and Sensitive Documents
Movers may be willing to transport the following items, but think twice before you hand over anything irreplaceable like:
- Address books
- Bank statements
- Bonds
- Cash
- Checkbooks
- Credit cards
- Jewelry
- Keepsakes
- Keys
- Laptops
- Personal files
- Photos
- Software
- Stocks
Generally such items are small, and therefore easy enough to pack and move yourself.
