As you make your moving arrangements, it’s critical to find out what movers can’t move. Generally, questionable items fall into one of three categories: hazards, perishables, or valuables.
For your convenience, Ameritex Movers has compiled a helpful list of examples. However, please keep in mind this list of what movers can’t move is not all-encompassing. Read through your moving contract for an exhaustive list, and always ask questions if anything is unclear.
What Professional Movers Are Unable to Transport
Potentially Hazardous Items
It is illegal for professional movers to transport flammable, corrosive, explosive, or otherwise hazardous materials. This might include, but is not limited to:
- Loaded weapons
- Paint cans
If the pros won’t move it, you’d be wise to do the same. Don’t forget to drain fluid and remove batteries from everything you’re bringing. Also consider leaving paint and oils for your home’s next residents. Finally, check with the EPA to determine how to properly dispose of other chemicals.
Food and Perishables
While perishables aren’t exactly hazardous to movers, they are a liability because of the potential to spoil, die, or create contamination. In a local move, your moving crew might agree to transport food items at your own risk.
- Frozen or refrigerated food
- Open containers
Make sure you empty refrigerators, freezers, coolers, and deep freezers at least 24 hours in advance. Leave doors open to prevent mold growth. And, be sure to make special moving arrangements for animals and plants.
Valuables and Sensitive Documents
Movers may be willing to transport the following items, but think twice before you hand over anything irreplaceable like:
- Address books
- Bank statements
- Credit cards
- Personal files
Generally such items are small, and therefore easy enough to pack and move yourself.
