Apartment Move-In Inspection Checklist
As you go through this inspection checklist, make careful notes of anything that’s damaged or not in working order. Take your time and don’t let anyone make you feel rushed. Your attention to detail could make the difference in whether you get your deposit back when your lease runs out.
- Flooring
Check for major scrapes and loose boards, cracked tiles, or ripped carpet.
- Walls
Look for holes, scuffs, loose mounts, and other imperfections.
- Furnishings
Does your apartment come furnished? If so, check the condition of all furniture and window treatments. - Appliances
Make sure to test all of the following, as well as look for cosmetic issues:- Refrigerator
- A/C Unit
- Washer/Dryer
- Water Heater
- Stove
- Dishwasher
- Plumbing
Flush, drain, and turn on water sources. Make a note of anything that is stained or gouged.- Toilets
- Sinks and Faucets
- Bathtubs and Showers
- Shelving Areas
Inspect the sturdiness of each of the following. Ensure doors open and close easily.- Pantry
- Cabinets
- Laundry Room
- Linen Closet
- Electric and Wiring
Turn on all lights. Test all wires, cables, and phone jacks.- Light Fixtures
- Bulbs
- Outlets
- Cable Hookups
- Locks, Doors, Windows
Open and close doors and windows. Test out locks. Inspect blinds, screens, and knobs. - Safety Equipment
Perhaps the most important items on this list, make sure the following are up to date and in working order:- Smoke Alarms
- Alarm Systems
- Fire Extinguishers
