An estimated one in four children in Southeast Texas is at risk of hunger. Our partnership with the Houston Food Bank is essential to fighting that statistic. This collaboration is one of our favorite ways we serve our community. An ongoing project that’s especially near to our hearts is the Backpack Buddy program.

Backpack Buddy Program

The program began 11 years ago as a way to ensure schoolchildren and their families have access to nutritious food when they aren’t at school. Every Friday, volunteers pack up thousands of food sacks, each containing six meals. The meals contain balanced amounts of fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy, and proteins. It’s enough to share with siblings and even parents. Best of all, they fit perfectly inside the students’ backpacks.

Ameritex Movers is happy to give back to our community schools. The Houston Food Bank doesn’t have access to the number of trucks it needs, so we do our part and deliver the food to local schools each week. Every Friday since 2014, Ameritex volunteers our trucks and our time to provide meals to at-risk children and their families. In a year, we deliver anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 packs all over the city of Houston.

Get Involved In Your Community

We do everything we can to aid in this effort. But we can’t do it without your help! Far too many of our Houston students depend on school lunches just to get by. As a result, they are most susceptible to malnutrition during the weekends and holidays. For this reason, the Backpack Buddy program is essential to the well-being of our area children.

If you would like your child to be included in the Backpack Buddy program, contact his or her elementary school’s administration to find out if the school is a participating member.
