12 Tips for Adjusting When You’re New in Town
No matter your reason for moving, sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what you need. Living in a new place can set you on a wonderful, unexpected, and revitalizing path. There are lots of variables when moving to a new city, but it doesn’t have to be nerve-wracking. Read on for tips on how to adjust when you’re new in town.
1. Understand that it won’t automatically be easy.
Someone once said, “You can wrestle a bear for a week,” meaning that almost anything is possible if you take it one step at a time. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t feel like a native right away.
2. Rent a home somewhere safe and comfortable.
Instead of looking for your dream home right away, take some time to get a lay of the land before making a major commitment. Find a rental house or apartment in the meantime.
3. Decorate your new place to feel like home.
Quickly unpack and display meaningful items that remind you of home. Pictures, pillows, candles, and throws can go a long way toward having a livable, comfortable space.
4. Take time off work to settle in.
Give yourself a few days to regroup and get your home in order. Don’t forget to rest and leisurely explore your surroundings.
5. Quickly locate important places like medical offices and grocery stores.
Beyond that, consider your specific needs. Are you a student? You’ll need to get familiar with your new campus. Do you have children? Find the nearest playgrounds, school, and pediatrician.
6. Focus on your lifestyle.
Think about what’s important to you. For instance, if you can’t make it through the day without a caffeinated pick-me-up, be sure to quickly find the closest coffee shops.
7. Network.
Try to strike up an acquaintance with neighbors and coworkers. Use them as a resource if you need recommendations.
8. Use social media to make friends.
You never know who could be in your area. Mention your move on your social network of choice to see who might want to (safely) meet, or use a site like Meetup.
9. Take advantage of your city’s mobile apps.
Download apps to find everything from local news to nearby gas prices and updates on your favorite sports team.
10. Get out there, even if you don’t feel like it.
Say yes to as many social invitations as possible. This is the fastest way to make friends and get yourself out of a funk.
11. Seek out like-minded people.
What are you passionate about? Join a church, a club, or a sports league and you’re sure to meet individuals with similar interests.
12. Give yourself time.
Don’t give up if you’re feeling discouraged or homesick. This is a normal part of being new in town. Be patient with yourself and understand you won’t magically adjust overnight. In time, you’ll begin to feel at home.
