First Things To Do When You Move Into A New Place [Infographic]
What To Do After Moving Into A New Place
Not all of these tasks are necessary, depending on the type of home. For instance, most apartment complexes won’t allow you to change your locks unless there are extenuating circumstances. Still, it’s good to be aware of your options to be as safe and comfortable as possible.
Check out the infographic for a quick glimpse of the first things to do when moving in, and read below for more detailed instructions.
1. Locate your main water valve and electric panel.
In case of a plumbing emergency, it’s crucial to know how to turn off your water. The main valve could be either inside or outside your house. Test it by turning on any faucet.
Also locate your breaker box. It’s often in the garage. While you’re at it, make sure all switches are labeled properly. This will save time and irritation in the future.
2. Replace smoke detector batteries and change air filters.
These are quick, inexpensive tasks that could save your life and keep you healthy. This is an important first step before settling into your new place.
3. Change your locks and update your alarm system.
If you’re able, take the time to boost your security. New residents can be easy targets for inside crime. Plus, you never know who has a key to your place or knows the alarm code.
4. Clean thoroughly.
It’s likely the former residents cleaned before they left, but you’ll want to make sure everything is spotless and sanitary. Steam cleaning carpets is always smart.
5. Designate one room you want to set up first.
You’ll probably want to focus on your kitchen and bathrooms first. But after that, choose a room to unpack that will function as your sanctuary — most likely your living room or master bedroom. You’ll be much less frustrated by the moving process if you have a retreat that’s fully unpacked.
6. Organize as you unpack.
Take the opportunity to put all of your belongings away in logical places where they’re easy to find.
7. Meet the neighbors.
Neighbors are your best resource if you need anything or have questions. Be sure to foster relationships from the beginning.
Our best advice is not to try to do all of this alone. Ask friends and family for help, and hire professionals like locksmiths and cleaning companies if possible. Take everything one task at a time, and use a checklist as you’re working.
