How To Pack Your Kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of a home. It’s where you cook for your family, gather for entertaining, and make your favorite seasonal treats. As a result, kitchens have a way of accumulating lots of odds and ends — gadgets, measuring utensils, pots and pans, dinnerware, fine china, and baking dishes, just to name a few. And don’t forget about all that food.

So what happens when you need to pack your kitchen, due to moving or remodeling? The heart of your home can also be the trickiest to pack. Check out our pro tips for boxing up a kitchen.

How To Pack Your Kitchen

First, gather your packing supplies. Next, pack a box filled with kitchen items you know you’ll need within the first few days of moving. This might include:

  • Everyday dishes
  • A few pieces of silverware
  • Coffee pot
  • Toaster
  • Skillet
  • Cooking utensils

Finally, pack your kitchen one category at a time.

Small Appliances

The easiest way to pack kitchen gadgets is in the original packaging. If you can’t locate them, grab medium-sized boxes. Disassemble and clean the appliances before wrapping them in bubble wrap or a couple layers of newspaper. And don’t forget to include owner manuals, too.

Pots and Pans

Packing pots and pans is simple because most of them stack. Find a box to fit your stack, while making sure to wrap copper, stone, or glass pieces in packing paper. You can stow lids in the empty space underneath your pot handles.

Kitchen Utensils

You don’t have to be particularly creative or technical to pack up this category. Simply wrap each utensil in packing paper and place it in a medium-sized box.

Dinnerware

Choose medium size boxes and don’t overstuff. Place a couple layers of bubble wrap in the bottom, and wrap each plate, saucer, or bowl in packing paper before stacking. Stick a piece of bubble wrap in between every few plates for extra stability. Then, use bubble wrap for thin glass items like barware and teacups, and pack them separately.

Silverware

Silverware is simple to pack, but don’t make the mistake of packing it all together. Separate by type — knives, forks, and spoons — and use a rubber band to secure them together. Then, simply wrap each stack in packing paper and place in a shoebox. Genius, right?

Pantry and Fridge

Use the packing process as an excuse to thoroughly examine your food items. Canned and boxed goods travel well, but make sure you toss anything that’s expired. Tote bags are handy for stacking food, and you can take them with you instead of sending with your movers. If you bring any refrigerated or frozen goods, stick them in a cooler.

If you follow these professionally tested guidelines, you can easily and efficiently pack up even the largest, most cluttered kitchen.
